Simon the Sorcerer and Spiritual Weed

Simon the Sorcerer and Spiritual Weed

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one.
Acts 8:9

With Satan as his source, Simon astounded the people and arrested them with sorcery, which is strongly shunned in Scripture and is decisively deemed detestable and forbidden by God.

Deuteronomy 18:9–12
When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Despite the Word of God commanding refutation of sorcery, the tentacle of its treachery continues to touch and trap countless souls. There are several factors that forward its fascination and fixture in the heads and hearts of millions:

  • Cultural Rebirth: An augmented interest in fantasy genres in media has invigorated interest in magical practices.

  • Spiritual Seeking: Many seek alternative spiritual paths, turning to sorcery for personal empowerment and connection.

  • Community Construction: Online platforms cultivate communities where practitioners share knowledge and experiences.

  • Historical Curiosity: A mounting fascination with history and ancient practices boosts exploration of sorcery's roots.

  • Self-Expression: Sorcery serves as a form of self-expression and creativity through rituals and spells.

Again, without apology, the Word of God depicts sorcery as a deliberate dismissal of God’s authority and a perverted path that leads us away from the truth. As believers, we bank on our faith to travel through life’s trials.

2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.

In addition, we must also identify that sorcery can serve as a snare, dragging us toward a deplorable ditch of false promises and fantasy-filled contentment. Scripture unequivocally demands that we trust in God alone.

Psalm 37:5
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

When we willfully weigh the warnings against sorcery, we assert our allegiance to the ALMIGHTY and assign ourselves to a life guided by God’s light, as well as choosing to stay clear of spiritual darkness.

John 1:5
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

In this context, "light" often corresponds to Christ and His divine truth, while "darkness" personifies ignorance, evil, or disbelief. The passage points us to the fact that the truth and salvation carried by Christ shine even in a world filled with ignorance and evil, but the "darkness" (ignorance and evil) does not understand or accept this light.

Thus, sorcery, which is dark, cannot apprehend the awesome Light of the Lord.

In our next time together, we will scrutinize the spiritual Simons that seek to seduce us.

Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
