Petitioning the Proper Parameters for a Relationship with the Lord — Part 4
"Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes." — Psalm 119:124 (KJV)
At this junction of our blog series (Petitioning the Proper Parameters for a Relationship with the Lord), our text has presented several thoughts that assist us in transitioning into a richer relationship with the Lord.
As it relates to our relationship with the Lord, He will and must always take the lead because He is Lord of our lives.
John 15:5 — "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
When we are incorporating a genuine relationship with the Lord that is regulated by the Holy Spirit, we will rightly identify ourselves as a servant and elevate Jesus as Lord of our lives.
Isaiah 46:5 — "To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?"
John 3:30 — "He must increase, but I must decrease."
The psalmist petitioned the Master’s matchless mercy. Accordingly, one’s appeal for mercy is attached to actions that call for mercy. In other words, we want mercy to show up when we mess up! And it is God’s incredible and infinite intervention that breaks forth from His merciful love for His children.
Ephesians 2:3–5 — "Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)"
We close this fourth installment of instruction (Petitioning the Proper Parameters for a Relationship with the Lord) with this thought: The psalmist petitions the Lord to teach and instruct him for increased intimacy with the Lord and His Word. Pursuing personal and profound intimacy with the Lord is inseparable from His instruction. Instruction teaches us and facilitates a close connection to Christ our Lord and God. It contours our comprehension of His Word and His will for our lives. As a matter of fact, He promises to teach us about life—and especially how to enjoy a thriving and wonderful walk with Him. The Word of God has a lot to say about God being our transcending teacher!
Psalm 32:8 — "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye."
Job 6:24 — "Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred."
Psalm 119:125 — "I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies."
In our endeavor to enter deeper intimacy with the Lord, we must eliminate the expectations of our ego, embrace His instructions, and let Him lead.
Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
