Processing Presumptuous Sin
For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. – Hebrews 10:26
This week’s Blog was initiated by an inquiry from a member of our church where I serve as the Lord’s under shepherd (Cornerstone Bible Fellowship), with respect to our opening passage. What did the writer of Hebrews mean when he declared that if we sin willfully, there remains no more sacrifice for sin?
Some Bible translations replace the word willfully, which is in the (KJV), with deliberately. But I believe the word (verb) willfully (KJV) communicates a more considerable exchange of exercise with regards to disobedience. That is, “for if we willfully go on sinning.” Or in other words, a constant disposition that is deliberately driven to be disobedient.
Biblically, I’m sure you will agree that this is not a hook of repetition to hang your head and heart hat on! And a soul selecting to sail on this lawless ship S.S.S. (seditious–selfish–stubborn) is embarking on a destination of eternal destruction.
Proverbs 10:29 – The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
Proverbs 13:13 – Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
Proverbs 21:15 – It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
Now, as we biblically process the phrase if we sin willfully, it walks our understanding to what the Word of God refers to as Presumptuous sins. What is presumptuous sin?
Presumptuous sins are sins committed by individuals that are driven and devoted to disobeying God willfully and knowingly. It is also a direct defiance of what a person understands to be right or true, which is in distinct contrast to sins of obliviousness or weakness. The bottom line is that presumptuous sins are intentional acts of rebellion against eternal ethics and our Eternal Father, who is the absolute authority.
Psalms 22:28 – For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.
Isaiah 40:22–23 – It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in. That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.
In Scripture, specifically the book of Numbers chapter 15 verse 30, the attitude that activates and is associated with Numbers' presumptuous is characterized as a sin as one committed “with a high hand.”
Numbers 15:30 – But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Again, presumptuously or high hand signifies sin that is arrested in arrogance and deep in defiance. In addition, this behavior bolsters blasphemy against the Lord and consequently will be cut off (put to death) from His people.
People that pursue and practice presumptuous sin are possessed with pride and are in danger of permanently positioning themselves to experience the penalty of the second death.
I invite you to join me next time as we continue to consider this serious subject of presumptuous sins.
